The Rhythmic Structure_ CONTEXT/REFLECTION

Categorising all designs by putting them in collections because of the colour involved in them, I needed to consider the names of the colours more. By re naming the colours in a more interesting name it gives the project another personality as well as the actual designs, I researched into the names already given and selected names the i found more appealing and well suited.
The new collection names being... Khaki= Hookers green, Lime=Chartreuse and Yellow=Cadmium.

Collection Board of Hookers Green, showing all designs for the collection and each design given own names.

A smaller collection in comparison to Hookers green and Cadmium, but Chartreuse collection showing all four designs  with their given names.

Cadmium Collection, with I Dots entry still in the collection. Again all design have their own names.

Finalising the last bits for The Rhythmic Structure, ready for assessment. I wanted to create sample packs for the 3 collections so that the audience could pick the designs up individually as well as a collection if they were ever to be bought. By making collection packs to present for assessment it will be a more creative way to show all the designs.

The making of the collection packs that will be presented for assessment
Each design I had to individually place on photoshop and had to adjust heights and widths to fit on to A3
The Collections will be printed on to A3 Card

Alongside my collection boards and sample packs, i wanted to be able to show my context by putting all designs into visualisations, the reason being by showing the actual scale of the prints when placed on a backdrop. I found when placing the patterns into context that it brought the designs to life and that they suited the context of being wallpapers.
All designs in context will be presented in a sketch book.

The Rhythmic Structure_ DIRECTION_REFLECTION

I have chosen a few Designs to show the process of how i have created them and how i have made them into a all over repeat pattern, these designs are now ready to be placed into context for assessment.

A few motifs converted into photoshop to create bolder, stronger rhythmic marks

CHARTREUSE_02
This design has been scanned from original mark making motifs and placed into a repeat.

CADMIUM_05
This design has been placed into a all over repeat, motifs scanned in from the original mark making

HOOKERSGREEN_04
The original marks transferred onto photoshop and have been recreated to be more bold and graphic, placed in a block repeat

I have selected the design that i will be entering for the I Dott competition, the design below was chosen for its repetitiveness and i felt that the motifs used portrayed the briefs critera, the design is an all over repeat pattern.

I-DOTTS competition entry, design is from the Cadmium Collection.
Simple use of mark making that responds to rhythm by having fluent use of lines,
strong bold colours with a beating effect.

The Rhythmic Structure_DIRECTION

Due to this project being at a faster pace than project 1, decision-making was quick and fast, so I tried to simplify my decision by only producing black and white motifs aswell as designs based around the colour pallete chosen. I started by freely creating different marks, responding through objects around my home as well as using other materials to create unique marks and textures with mainly a black medium, the intention was to create clean, crisp line in response to 1950s artwork.

Whilst creating the lines, I needed them to be easily made a rhythmic pattern, the lines of each mark have different qualities to them, by some being bold and strong marks and others being loose to create a flow affect. Working with black and white to give a toned, structured effect.

The colour pallete I introduced in my designs was sourced from Marnie Fogg book, there was 3 main colours that I liked when gathering research, and the colours selected were colours that I found related to present day, as well as bringing out qualities in my design work.

From my feedback it was suggested of using the motifs and using them as backgrounds as well as foregrounds to give them a textured effect, the idea of using the motifs as a background and foreground would take my designs further away from the 1950s style.

The Rhythmic Structure_ OUTWARD FACING

I DOTT an annual competition that encourages surface print  students to be involved in a competition that allows them to enter into the competition and select briefs to create unique and fresh designs.
I have chosen to select IDOTT due to my last project allowing me to apply unique patterns onto duality of surfaces , and this project been given a specific brief to each category. As much as I like writing my own brief, i much prefer to work with a brief that is written already, i prefer someone else's brief because I can expand on what they had thought already and by expanding this could be taking the brief to another level and to create something that was not planned.

The project for myself will be an extended version of Ansley's brief on rhythm, my projects will be inspired from a 1950s artist Lucien Day and other artists. The connection with 1950s print is how structured and freely the designers used there work back in the 1950s by producing strong, bold marks that created a new way of print to be seen as, the research for this project has been collected by Marnie Foggs 1950s print[fig1]: Using the book as a source was to create a body of research that could help me create newer and fresher marks that would eventually lead me away from the 1950s style and that it would categories my work differently by me interrupting the work and creating it into a rhythmic way, The outline of this project is to use marks that would create fluent shapes and a structured outcome with a linear quality to them.
The colour pallet for this project has been selected from the 1950s era.
