“The way in which something is made,
designed, or performed”
oxford dictionary
Cryptic Undisclosed is a project that is for the market of
commercial retail interiors, this chosen context is the type of cliental I feel
I have adapted into over the three years at university, even more so from this
project. Commercial retail for interiors, a context I hold close to myself due
to working in the retailing market which includes having a job role that caters
to the area of work I wish to undertake, also by under going work experience in
a graphic design company last year, it opened my eyes more into looking at surface
patterns that could be applied on to meaningful objects that could transform
any space into a fun, bold working/social area.
Cryptic Undisclosed has developed vastly from the practice unit,
this development has shown the process from experimenting onto paper using
laser cutting, and an idea of applying designs onto possible outcomes for
interiors. Where as cryptic undisclosed has allowed to use previous knowledge
by having body of work that includes the following; sample books of laser cut
materials, products for interior living areas, wallpapers and a look book, this
project has spiraled into an art direction and styling project, about products.
Using the portfolio to highlight the relevance of how I have styled and created
this project using directed and styled photos of my work.
However, by art direction/styling being an outcome the Initial
aim is commercial retailing for interiors, having commercial retailing for
interiors as a context for this project has given me opportunities to see what
other branded retailers are doing now, this has been reflected by my own initial
knowledge due to my job role in retail. Commercial retail interests me because
of how fast speeded it is and being product and surfaced pattern based, it
allows you to connect with your customers/buyers by giving them fresh and fun
designs produced for the certain customer’s style. The main kind of retailers I
looked into were the ones who were not afraid of showing their creativeness and
to show what type of brand they are because of they way they have designed and
made the product.
Companies like Ikea, TK Maxx being the high street end of the
commercial retailing, how they produce well-designed products, that are
functional and both offer a certain quirkiness to their stores.
The higher end of the commercial retailers from how on trend
they are with their products were stores like John Lewis, House of Fraser, Next
Home. Slightly more expensive products but supposedly better quality.
For this project I have reflected upon my personal experiences
and came to a conclusion of needing something to offer, a promotional package
as such. Because of the work I produce has a certain flare/edge to it, I need
to show that in a way that would suit this idea and for my proposed audiences.
